Spray Foam Roofing & Insulation FAQs
Commercial and residential customers in Albuquerque, NM often have many of the same questions about spray foam roofing. Here are our answers:
Do spray foam roofs absorb water?
No. The closed cell spray foam is so water resistant that it can be used for flotation. The spray foam has a buoyancy factor of 80, which means one pound of spray foam will float 80 pounds of weight! The roof system we apply is a closed-cell polyurethane foam, which means that the roof system/building insulation is made of small cells that are completely closed, entrapping a gas that provides excellent heat resistance. Because the cells are closed, spray foam roofing provides a moisture barrier as well, so it can be used for residential and commercial exterior wall applications, roof coating and interior HVAC insulation.
Can you walk on spray foam roofing?
Yes. Spray foam roofing has a very short curing time—about 30 seconds. Spray foam has a very high compressive strength; we actually install HVAC units on skids directly over the spray foam. We have done correctional facility roofs that guards walk on with steel-toe boots twice a day to do roof checks. We have also done another roof for a community center where they would sit on the roof with chairs directly on the foam.
Why use gravel to cover spray foam roofing?
Spray foam roofing is in the plastic family, and plastics will degrade without any protection from the intense New Mexico sun. One inch of gravel provides UV protection for your roof system. A roof coating provides the same protection. However, coatings will degrade with exposure to the elements and require reapplication every ten years. Gravel, on the other hand, provides UV protection without wearing out, often making it the most cost-effective and very low maintenance option, with only the vertical surfaces requiring coating.
